LIVE NASA TV COVERAGE FOR ARRIVAL OF NEXT SPACE STATION CARGO SHIP
HOUSTON - The crew aboard the International Space Station will receive
a new shipment of food, fuel and supplies from a Russian Progress
spacecraft due to dock with the station on Friday, Jan. 19. NASA
Television will broadcast the arrival live.
After launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on
Wednesday, Jan. 17, the Progress 24 spacecraft is scheduled to dock
to the station about 10 p.m. CST, Jan. 19. Live coverage of the
docking begins at 9 p.m.
The Progress will bring more than two tons of supplies to the
Expedition 14 crew. Currently aboard the station are Commander Mike
Lopez-Alegria and Flight Engineers Mikhail Tyurin and Suni Williams.
Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin have been aboard the station for four
months. Williams joined them in December to begin a six-month stay in
orbit.

NASA BRIEFING TO PREVIEW JUPITER FLYBY OF PLUTO MISSION
WASHINGTON - NASA will host a news briefing at 1 p.m. EST, Thursday,
Jan. 18, to preview the flight of the Pluto-bound New Horizons
spacecraft through the Jupiter system. The briefing will take place
in the NASA Headquarters auditorium, 300 E St., S.W., Washington. The
briefing will air live on NASA Television and streamed at
New Horizons will use Jupiter's gravity to boost its speed toward the
outer solar system, while training its cameras and sensors on the
giant planet and its moons during a six-month encounter.

Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms
(THEMIS) mission on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. EST.
THEMIS consists of five identical probes that will study the violent
colorful eruptions of the Earth auroras. The satellites will to
launch aboard a Delta II rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center,
Fla., on Thursday, Feb. 15, for a two-year mission.

PANEL WILL STUDY MARS GLOBAL SURVEYOR EVENTS
WASHINGTON - NASA has formed an internal review board to look more
indepth into why NASA's Mars Global Surveyor went silent in November
2006 and recommend any processes or procedures that could increase
safety for other spacecraft.
Mars Global Surveyor launched in 1996 on a mission designed to study
Mars from orbit for two years. It accomplished many important
discoveries during nine years in orbit. On Nov. 2, the spacecraft
transmitted information that one of its arrays was not pivoting as
commanded. Loss of signal from the orbiter began on the following
orbit.
Mars Global Surveyor has operated longer at Mars than any other
spacecraft in history and for more than four times as long as the
prime mission originally planned.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., manages Mars Global
Surveyor for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.
Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Denver, developed and operates the
spacecraft.
